Ascend UC Berkeley Chapter Seeks New Mentors

My name is Kevin Xu. I graduated from UC Berkeley and was a student leader at Ascend. I learned much during my time in Ascend; now that I am working, I want to continue to help the Berkeley Student Chapter prosper. I will be transitioning into Cher Lee's role as Ascend Berkeley Advisor and coordinate the Berkeley Mentorship Program for Spring 2013. Larry Chang, co-president of the Ascend professional chapter, has asked me to contact you directly.

We are looking for new mentors who are interested to coach our student members in their career endeavors. Next Saturday, February 23, Ascend Berkeley will be hosting their Mentorship Kick-off, the first event where students and mentors will be meeting to set the tone and expectations for the semester. Having a mentor when I was recruiting was invaluable. One of the advantages of the Berkeley Mentorship Program is that the mentors are paired with students in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio. This allows both parties to develop a strong connection without dividing too much attention.

If you wish to volunteer, this will be a great event to get to know the student chapter and its members. From past experiences, personal support and coaching from professionals across a variety of industries made Ascend Berkeley uniquely successful and stand-out among the many business organizations on campus.

Please see below for logistics.

Mentorship Kickoff Date: Saturday, February 23, 2013
Time: 1-3PM
Location: 200 Wheeler, UC Berkeley campus
Dress code: Casual
Format: Greetings, Presentation, Icebreaker Games, Mingle time Refreshments will be provided.

If you have questions, please contact me at kevin.xu@ey.com or (415) 738-9909 and I will be happy to provide further details. If you are interested in becoming a mentor for Spring 2013, please let me know and I will pair you up with a student who is interested in your line of work.

Eye Color:

Look at both the rim of the eye as well as the middle of the iris and try to notice the different colors that you see. Are there flecks of a color showing up? An undertone of green, blue, violet? If you can't tell, hold up those colors by your eyes and see if you notice them or not. Look very closely in the mirror with natural light around you. If your eyes are brown, wear your brown with the white color in the whites of your eyes. It will make your eyes shine and stand out.

Basic Colors:

These colors come from your hair color. Be sure to look at the lightest and darkest parts of your hair, including your eyebrows. You may notice your hair is off black, brownish black, or even a blue black. Maybe it's mahogany, cool dark brown, or charcoal brown. Notice if the tone is warm or cool and match this tone in your basic colors. These basic colors act as a background and need touches of other colors or metals to give them vitality. The Commonwealth Club is a great place with a lot of history -- for example, Shirley Temple Black is a prior President for this group. People were excited to see Amy Chua speak; the audience filled up the main room quickly and additional people ended up standing in the back. The Commonwealth Club partnered with Ascend to present this event.

Amy began by expressing how she believes many have misunderstood her as a result of writing "Tiger Mother." She began writing this book as a sort of therapy after her youngest daughter Lulu and her got into a big fight at the Red Square in Moscow. It took her just a few months to write about 2/3 of the book because everything came out so easily. Many parts of the book were meant to be humorous and even sarcastic -- although she realizes that others have interpreted it differently.

Amy was raised by "Tiger Parents" in Indiana. She reflected how their strict parenting was out of love, and she would never talk back to them. When it came time for Amy to be a parent, she also raised her first daughter Sophia in a strict manner. Sophia was well behaved and Amy didn't understand why other parents thought parenting was so difficult. Then came her youngest daughter Lulu. Lulu in many was has a similar personality to Amy, which led to confrontations. Lulu was not afraid to talk back to her Mom, and Amy realized that her parenting techniques that worked on Sophia would not work on Lulu.

Writing the book became a bonding experience for Amy, her husband Jed, and their daughters Sophia and Lulu. Amy stressed that she believes there are many ways to successfully raise children, and the "Tiger Way" is merely one method. She is learning how to adapt her parenting techniques as she continues to raise Lulu, who is now 15 years old. Whereas Sophia never had sleepovers, learned to play the piano, concentrated on grades, etc. -- Lulu has had a few sleepovers at the house, quit playing violin, is now playing tennis, and balances school with her social life.

In the Q&A session, Amy expressed how parenting must be done with love. Her parents were strict, yes, but they let her know that they love her. This has had a resounding impact on Amy's life. Although Amy enjoys the mini-celebrity that has come with this book, she stated that her next book will be more academic. After the Q&A, Amy took photos and signed books -- and was very kind to stay late so that all people in line got to meet her.

Participants' Feedback

On Amy Chua’s parenting methods:
"I admire her for being honest. I think that everything she did… was for [her daughters’] benefit.” "Her methods are very similar to German philosophies.”

Would you all agree that the Ascend Holiday Reception last night was a smashing success?

People hung around well past 9 pm. Many complimented us as the "most friendly group in town".

I believe we delivered on the brand promise of Ascend in the following ways:

1. Twenty eight of you showed up last night to spread the spirit of Ascend volunteers; we were very contagious last night.
2. The Wharton venue was beautifully decorated for the holidays, and exuded high class.
3. The hors d'oeuvres, desserts, wine and beverages were displayed beautifully; and served by a friendly staff.
4. President of SF Board of Supervisors David Chiu presented himself as a close friend of Ascend and a strong supporter of our mission.
5. The invited officers from other Asian professional organizations experienced first hand the camaraderie of Ascend.
6. We welcomed newcomers, introduced them to many people, and encouraged them to attend Ascend events.
7. Our SFSU and Cal Berkeley students displayed a strong sense of leadership, showcasing the Youth of Ascend.
8. We were very generous and donated five boxes full of school supplies to Tools 4 Schools.

Happy Holidays!!

NorCal LEAD event at Clorox

Today, we held an Ascend LEAD event sponsored by Clorox at City Center Oakland. We took the combined LEAD and Mentoring format to Clorox employees, while allowing a limited set of Ascend members to participate.

Approximately 45 people (3 Ascend speakers, 2 Clorox speakers, 4 Ascend mentors, 3 Clorox mentors, 27 Clorox employees and 6 Ascend members) attended this 2 hour session today at noon. Wanda Royse was the very capable moderator. Karen Luey of Jamba Juice and Prakash Ramachandran of NordicWindpower were the panel speakers. Arthur Chin, Buck Gee, Larry Chang and Wes Hom led the small table discussions and mentoring.

Executives from Clorox included Tarang Amin, SVP and General Manager; Sheldon Quan, VP Legal; Raj Rajaratnam, VP Global Insight; and Erby Foster, Director of Diversity. James Yen organized the event.

Five notable successes:

1. The topic "Characteristics of Leaders: Driving and Implementing Change" was well accepted.
2. Wanda was a terrific moderator.
3. The small table mentoring discussions were very energetic. Arthur, Buck and Wes are characteristically outspoken and provocative.
4. Jackie Matsumura, partner at BPM, saw the event promoted online; and sponsored three of her tax specialists to attend.
5. At least five attendees made a point to register and attend because they found our annual conference compelling.

This combined LEAD and Mentoring format was also extremely well received during the October LEAD event on "Managing Your Career" in East Palo Alto.

I think we have a winner with this combined format!!
Regards, Larry

NorCal LEAD Team Hits a Home Run Tonight!

The Ascend LEAD team of Alison Cheung, Jerry Iwata and Wanda Royse hit a home run tonight!

Tonight's LEAD event on "Taking Charge of Your Career" at BMP in East Palo Alto and sponsored by E&Y was a big hit tonight. Inspite of intense competition from the SF Giants and the World Series Game 1, we drew 30 attendees and speakers. All five panelists were terrific. Although each had started in finance and accounting ... their career diverged in five different directions. This provided plenty of discussion points for our audience.

After the spirited panel discussion, the group was broken into five small circles of five attendees and one speaker/mentor. The ensuing small mentor circle disscussions were the best part of the event, showcasing our Brand. Alison and Jerry had to drag everyone back into the large meeting room to close, even though we were approaching 9pm, one hour later than the scheduled ending time of 8pm.

Special thanks goes to Arthur Chin and Scott Chong for showing up to spread the Ascend Family Spirit.

NorCal Social Mixer was a Big Hit!!

We wanted to thank Jacob Chung and Terry Matsufuji for organizing an exceptional Ascend Social Mixer at Cafe Renzo in Palo Alto. It was well attended by approximately 30 people; some familiar faces and many new prospects.

It was a big hit for three reasons:

1. In additon to Jacob and Terry, we appreciate the attendance of Jerry Iwata, MK Lee and Scott Chong. There were six of us there to tell "stories" about Ascend, and "selling" our value proposition to prospects. Many of you invited your personal friends, which generated an immediate connection to Ascend. In the end,our collective contagious energy caught on ... and many prospects told us that they will join Ascend and/or attend our next LEAD or Mentoring event.

2. The venue and the food were exceptional. It is an upbeat cafe, in popular downtown Palo Alto, and had the flat panels tuned to the Giants baseball game. Go Giants. Orange had arrived early for Halloween.

3. Everyone had the opportunity to introduce him/her self. The event did not disperse until close to 10pm. Many people hung around and enjoyed the networking.

As a best practice, Jacob will send out a thank you email to each and every attendee ... thank them for coming, remind them of our future events, and invite them to join Ascend as a member if they have not already done so. Terry saw some weaknesses of our new registration system and processes based on feedback from the attendees. He will be contacting Art and Tifanny to improve them.

Thanks again to Jacob, Terry, Jerry, MK and Scott for making the evening a success.

Best,
Larry and Wade
